Van het midden van de twaalfde tot het midden van de veertiende eeuw behoorde de familie Berthout tot de rijkste en machtigste adellijke families in de Nederlanden. Leden van dit geslacht waren stadsheer van Mechelen en van Helmond en bezaten talrijke landelijke heerlijkheden. Ook in de hertogelijke raad van het hertogdom Brabant speelden de Berthouts een belangrijke politieke rol. Wouter V Berthout was van 1263 tot 1268 regent van de minderjarige hertogen Hendrik IV en Jan I. Zijn zoon Floris Berthout was tussen 1312 en 1314 regent van de minderjarige hertog Jan III en Floris’ broer Willem Berthout was van 1296 tot 1302 bisschop van Utrecht. Over de familie Berthout is bijzonder veel bronnenmateriaal bewaard gebleven. Op basis van uit-gebreid onderzoek in binnen- en buitenland heeft de auteur een belangrijk deel van het middeleeuwse familiearchief gereconstrueerd. De studie van dit ma-teriaal biedt een uniek beeld op het functioneren van een adellijke familie in het politieke en sociale leven van de late middeleeuwen. Zo krijgt de lezer onder andere een duidelijk overzicht van de wijdvertakte verwantenkring van de Berthouts. Ook het familiebezit, zijn waarde, het beheer ervan en de verdeling binnen de familie worden aan een onderzoek onderworpen. Er is ook aandacht voor de dienaars en ambtenaren van de Berthouts werkzaam in de huishoudingen en de administratieve kaders. De auteur slaagt er zo in om de mechanismen en strategieën bloot te leggen waarmee de familie Berthout trachtte om haar macht en vermogen te maximaliseren. Het boek wordt afgesloten met een kritische genealogie waarin gegevens zijn opgenomen over alle bekende familieleden.

This 2003 book is an important full-length study of the Portuguese royal court in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. It describes the fundamental importance of the court in defining the social position of kings, and shows how kings and nobles redefined one another, despite many celebrated political rivalries within the broader Iberian context. The book contains a detailed comparative analysis of the way royal courts were organized, and of the status, professional and gender groups inside the Portuguese court. The characteristics of the court society as a whole, however, were rooted mostly in the dynamics of hierarchy and interdependence - in the specific ways the different parts and the individuals were bonded to each other. These bonds are discussed in light of later medieval concepts and theories. The book also describes the constant displacement of this complex community within Portugal, and how life at court was shaped by ceremonial duties and common activities.
